Mads Barnes is an American documentary photographer based in Naarm/Melbourne. They recently completed a Bachelor of Photography and Digital Imaging from Photography Studies College, majoring in photojournalism.

Originally from the U.S., they began photographing in 2017 while living in Germany during their service in the U.S. Army, where image-making became a way to understand people and place. Since then, Barnes has travelled through more than 40 countries, using photography to connect with people across cultures, documenting the everyday moments that shape a sense of place and belonging.

Their practice centres on intimate, long-term photographic projects exploring friendship, shared living, and the quiet moments of everyday life. Barnes is drawn to stories about belonging, identity, and human connection, creating work that is honest and emotionally grounded.

As a queer and nonbinary photographer, they are committed to representing LGBTQIA+ communities with care, trust, and authenticity.
