Mads Barnes is an American visual storyteller based in Naarm/Melbourne. They recently completed a degree in photography at Photography Studies College, majoring in photojournalism.

Originally from Portland, Oregon, they began photographing in 2017 while living in Germany, where image-making became a way to understand people and place. 

Their practice centres on intimate, long-term photographic projects exploring friendship, shared living, and the quiet moments of everyday life. Barnes creates work that is honest and emotionally grounded, with a focus on connection and lived experience. 

As a queer photographer, they are committed to representing LGBTQIA+ communities with care, trust, and authenticity.
